Inulin for Dogs
Inulin is safe for dogs at the amount used in Essential, and it supports a healthy gut microbiome and digestive function

Inulin for dogs: feeding the bacteria already living in the gut
Inulin doesn't add anything foreign to a dog's gut; it feeds the bacteria already there, which is why it appears in both Essential's gut-immune baseline and Prebiotic's microbiome-feed group.
What a prebiotic fibre actually does
Inulin is a prebiotic fibre, meaning it selectively feeds beneficial gut bacteria rather than passing through as bulk. In dogs, inulin-type fructans have been shown to shift faecal microbiota composition and increase short-chain fatty acid production, the byproduct those bacteria generate when fed well. An earlier study on inulin supplementation in dogs found similar effects on digestibility and faecal characteristics.
That gut-level effect connects to more than digestion: a balanced microbiome plays a role in immune function and broader physiological resilience, which is why inulin sits in Essential's gut-immune group rather than a digestion-only category.
Starting slow with a new fibre
Any new fibre source can cause temporary gas or looser stool while a dog's gut adjusts, inulin included. Dogs with a sensitive stomach should start with the lower Essential amount and build up gradually rather than starting at a higher dose.
