Psyllium husk for dogs: shaping stool, not feeding gut bacteria
Psyllium and inulin both count as fibre, but they do different jobs in Prebiotic: psyllium shapes stool, inulin feeds the bacteria that shape the gut itself.
A gel-forming fibre, not a microbiome fibre
Psyllium husk is a soluble fibre that absorbs water and forms a gel-like matrix in the digestive tract, supporting stool form, normal bowel rhythm and digestive comfort. A study in police working dogs with chronic idiopathic large-bowel diarrhoea found soluble fibre supplementation helped manage the condition, supporting psyllium's role for stool quality specifically.
A randomised cross-over trial comparing fibre types found psyllium didn't significantly shift gut microbiota richness the way resistant starch did. That's exactly why Prebiotic combines it with inulin, a fibre shown to influence microbiota composition more directly, rather than relying on psyllium alone for that effect.
