Chondroitin for dogs: the cartilage-cushioning half of a joint-support duo

Cartilage needs to do two things at once: hold water and resist compression. Chondroitin sulfate is the structural compound behind the first, which is why Move pairs it with glucosamine rather than relying on either alone.

What chondroitin actually does inside a joint

Cartilage isn't solid tissue; it's a water-retaining matrix that has to stay hydrated to absorb shock. Chondroitin sulfate is a large, negatively charged molecule naturally present in that matrix, and its charge is what draws water in and holds it there, giving cartilage its cushioning and elasticity.

That hydration is what lets cartilage act as a shock absorber between bones during everyday movement: running, jumping off furniture, climbing stairs. Without enough of it, cartilage stiffens and cushions less effectively.

Why chondroitin is studied and used alongside glucosamine, not alone

A randomised, double-blind trial in dogs with osteoarthritis tested chondroitin and glucosamine together rather than either compound on its own, and a broader review of canine joint-support research follows the same pattern: the two are evaluated as a pair far more often than solo, because they support different parts of cartilage structure.

Chondroitin's role is the water-holding, shock-absorbing side; glucosamine contributes the raw material cartilage uses to rebuild itself. That's the logic behind Move combining both rather than choosing one.
