A senior dog sleeping more, moving slower, and showing less interest in a walk isn't simply "getting old" in some vague, unexplained sense. It's the same energy system covered earlier in this series, now running with fewer, less efficient mitochondria than it had a few years ago. That's a real, specific, measurable change, and knowing what it actually is changes what's worth doing about it.
What actually changes
Mitochondria, the structures inside cells that convert food into usable energy, decline gradually in number and efficiency with age. This isn't unique to dogs, or a sign of anything having gone wrong. It happens across mammals, including people, as a normal part of getting older. Fewer, less efficient mitochondria mean less energy available for the same tasks: the same walk takes more out of an older dog than it did at two years old, because the machinery producing the energy for it isn't running at the same capacity.
This is why "slowing down" tends to show up gradually and across the board, rather than as one sudden change. Less enthusiasm for a long walk, more time spent resting, a slower recovery after activity: these are downstream of the same underlying shift, not separate, unrelated symptoms.
Why it isn't purely fixed
The decline itself is real and not something to be undone. But how much it actually affects a dog, and how quickly, isn't fixed in the same way. Exercise, sleep, and diet, the same three inputs covered elsewhere in this series, still shape how well the remaining mitochondria perform. A senior dog that keeps up regular, appropriate movement conditions the energy-producing capacity it still has, the same way a younger dog's does. One that gets consistent, undisturbed sleep still gives that system its maintenance window. One eating a consistent, complete diet still supplies the raw materials the process runs on.
None of this reverses ageing. What it does is determine whether a senior dog is running a fewer-but-well-conditioned system, or a fewer-and-neglected one. The gap between those two is often larger than the gap age alone accounts for.
What actually helps
Movement still matters, adjusted rather than abandoned. Shorter, more frequent walks tend to suit an older dog's system better than the occasional long outing, and matching effort to what a dog can comfortably recover from, rather than pushing for the same distance as a few years ago, protects the system instead of overtaxing it.
Sleep quality matters more, not less, with age. Older dogs are often lighter, more easily disturbed sleepers, which cuts into the deep, uninterrupted stretches where the maintenance work described earlier in this series actually happens. A quiet, settled, disruption-free sleeping space does more here than most owners assume.
Diet consistency matters for a slightly different reason in older dogs: digestion and nutrient absorption shift with age, meaning the same diet may deliver less of what it used to. Sticking with a complete, good-quality diet, fed consistently, still gives an ageing system the steady raw materials it depends on, even as its own efficiency at using them declines a little.
The takeaway
Slowing down is real. "Just old age" undersells how much of it is still shaped by the same three inputs this series keeps coming back to: movement, sleep, and food, adjusted for where a dog actually is rather than where it used to be.
