Feed them well. Walk them daily. Let them rest. Every dog owner has heard some version of this list, handed out as three separate rules, as if a bag of food, a lead, and a bed were three unrelated boxes to tick. They aren't. They're one instruction, said three different ways, and the reason comes down to how a dog's cells make energy.

The mechanism

Every cell in a dog's body needs a constant supply of usable energy to do anything: move a muscle, digest a meal, repair a wound, form a memory. That energy comes from tiny structures inside almost every cell called mitochondria. The name is Greek, roughly "thread" and "grain," a nod to how they looked to the scientists who first saw them under early microscopes. They turn up in far greater numbers in the tissues that work hardest: muscle, heart, brain.

What mitochondria actually do is convert raw fuel, the sugars and fats in a dog's diet, into a chemical form the rest of the cell can use, a molecule called ATP. A single muscle cell can hold thousands of mitochondria, packed in wherever the demand for energy is highest. That conversion runs all the time, not just during a walk or after a meal. A dog asleep on the sofa is still burning through it, just more slowly.

Food, movement, and sleep all act on this same process, from different sides. That's the thread connecting three pieces of advice usually handed out as if they had nothing to do with each other.

Three angles on one system

Movement doesn't only build muscle. Regular activity prompts cells to grow more mitochondria and run the ones they already have more efficiently, the same way a muscle biopsy from a well-conditioned athlete shows visibly more mitochondria than one from someone sedentary. This happens in the hippocampus too, the brain region most involved in learning and memory, which is part of why exercise and mental sharpness tend to track together in dogs, much as they do in people. A daily walk isn't only working off energy. It's training the machinery that produces it.

Sleep isn't the body switching off. Twelve to fourteen hours a day, roughly what an adult dog sleeps, is a lot of time for a system that supposedly does nothing. Some of that time is a maintenance shift: worn or damaged mitochondria get broken down and cleared out, and new ones get built to replace them, on a schedule that mostly happens during the deepest phases of sleep rather than a light doze on the rug after lunch. Skip enough sleep and the maintenance backlog shows up as a duller, slower version of the same dog.

Food supplies the raw materials the whole system runs on. Not just fuel in the crude sense, but the specific cofactors, mostly B vitamins, iron, and a handful of minerals, that each step of the conversion process needs to keep moving. Iron in particular carries oxygen to where the process happens; without enough of it, the whole chain runs short of what it needs even if fuel itself is plentiful. Leave one of these cofactors out and that step in the chain slows down, however well-exercised or well-rested the dog otherwise is.

Why this reframe matters

None of this changes the advice itself. A dog still needs regular walks, consistent meals, undisturbed sleep. What changes is why those things matter, and it's a better reason than habit. Skipping a walk isn't a small, isolated miss. It's one input removed from a system that depends on all three arriving together. That's also why the plain, unglamorous basics tend to do more for a dog's health than any single fix aimed at one specific problem: the system runs on the combination, not on whichever piece is easiest to sell on its own.
